Refugees and Newcomers Enrich America and Communities Thrive Through Sponsorship

Following is a statement from Annie Nolte-Henning, executive director of the Community Sponsorship Hub.

President Trump’s Executive Orders regarding vital resettlement programs, including the termination of humanitarian parole programs and indefinite suspension of the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program effective January 27, 2025, are a sobering reminder of the challenges faced by those fleeing violence, conflict and persecution. It’s also a moment to reflect on the growing number of Americans across all 50 states and D.C. who have stepped up to help newcomers find safety and belonging as they begin their lives in America.

Like generations of Americans before them, refugees and newcomers yearn for a safe place to call home. When given the chance, they rebuild not only their lives but enrich the communities that welcome them—as neighbors, hardworking employees, small business owners, community leaders, and future Americans. Studies show that refugees have contributed nearly $124 billion to the American economy over 15 years, have high entrepreneurship rates starting businesses and creating new jobs, and help revitalize areas with declining population rates.

Newcomers have long played a vital role in shaping the fabric of our country. For just as long, Americans have welcomed them. This is a testament to our country’s enduring values of freedom, opportunity, and community.

Refugees who arrive through private sponsorship often integrate more quickly, secure jobs faster, and develop deeper connections in their communities. This is because sponsorship isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach—it’s deeply personal. Sponsors are everyday Americans—veterans, faith leaders, civic groups, and neighbors—empowered to take ownership of the well-being of their communities and the people who live in them. Sponsors volunteer to help families find housing, enroll their kids in school, and learn how to navigate everything from public transportation to grocery shopping to healthcare and American norms and culture.

Here at Community Sponsorship Hub, we are unyielding in our belief that there is a place for everyone in sponsorship. For all who believe in the strength of welcome, this moment is a call to deepen your commitment to the values that unite us. In communities of all sizes, we are working with sponsors and partners to build a more vibrant and resilient future for all Americans by ensuring sponsors can welcome newcomers with the care and dignity they deserve.
